Culloden Moor - The last stand for Bonnie Prince Charlie

Bonny Prince Charlie and his Scottish supporters (Jacobites) made their last stand at this unfortunate site. They had been successful in getting as far south as Derby before the will of some broke. They were concerned about being out numbered and manorvered by the English so, contrary to the Prince's wishes, they retreated north. With this retreat, the Engliash were able to get their manpower organized (they had been fighting on other fronts so needed to recall troops). By the time the Scots reached Culloden, they were very tired and hungry while the English werer in good shape. It was a devasting loss with over 700 Scots killed within minutes of the beginning of the fighting.

This battle in April 1746 was the last one fought on English soil. The Scottish National Trust did a great job of presenting the information in various formats. Very worth the effort.

We spent the night in Grantown-on-Spey in a very old hotel.
