Initially, our plan was to go to York but knew that we wanted to hit the coast by the evening so we could not have enough time to visit the many wonderful things in this old city. So we gave it a miss hoping to catch it on our way back down.
We headed for Whitby on the coast which has a wonderful old abbey but we were defeated by the crowds. The British schools are out and, traditionally, the last week in July and first week in August are traditional holiday times. So we tried Robin Hood’s Bay which was even more crowded.
We headed into the Yorkshire Moors to find a village inland where we could find accommodations. The Moors are really beautiful in their starkness.
We stayed at Chapters in Stokely which is a beautiful little village with a small river through it where locals feed the ducks and we watched. There is a little church with a graveyard all around it so we went to read the gravestones. One of the things which fascinated me was the fact that, over time, the weather wipes the writing off the stones. While we were snooping about, the vicar came by and asked if he could help us with locating an ancestor. We had a lovely talk with him. He was exactly what you would expect an English vicar to be.
If ever in Yorkshire, Stokely is a nice place to visit.
