Budapest

This picture is only a small part of a memorial at Heroes Square. This portion represents Arpad and the other leaders of the 7 tribes who conquered and settled the Hungarian plan in 896 AD. The Square is very large making tribute to a succession of Hungarian kings. The whole thing is topped by the Archangel Gabriel who has the King's crown in one hand and a paternal cross in the other.

This picture is the local version of public washrooms. The picture does not do it justice as it is really very ornate.

We headed out on the local bus system which we managed fairly well to book our train to Lake Balaton which is where the locals go when it gets hot in the city. So it is totally appropriate that we are going at this time. It has been very hot and muggy in Budapest.

We ate in the hotel again and had a very traditional Hungarian dinner of breaded schnitzel with parsleyed potatoes and a salad. John had the obligatory 'palinka' which is pure Hungarian rocket fuel but I stuck with a glass of red wine. Kathy, tried for some of Mom's retes but was on the menu for tomorrow and we will be gone. Aw well... Retes is the Hungarian equivalent of strudel and is really amazing (not very fattening) dessert. Maybe at the Balaton as I am really hoping for a good facsimile of what Mom made.
