This is a 13th. Century Seljuk (one of the tribes of Turks from the Mongolian plains who defeated the Romans)caravanseray. These were built by the Sultans to provide safety for the traffic along the Silk Road. The exterior wall was the outside wall of huge cavernous spaces for the people and animals to sleep, etc. The ceilings were atleast 20 feet high with domes and arches with only minimal light coming through small windows through the thick exterior walls. In the interior there was a courtyard with a well and shops for travellers to buy food. These caravanseray were strung all along the Silk Road as shelter and safety for the goods being transported. The Sultan of each actually provided insurance for any loss that occurred while they were in their protection.
