Today we caught local buses; first from Marbella to Fuengirola and then onto Mijas (pronounced as me has) for 1,20 Euro for each section. The cost was really reasonable. Mijas was recommended to us be several fellow travellers and it did not disappoint.
This small village is set about a mile up in elevation from the coast in the mountainside with panoramic views of the Costa del Sol. Even more exciting was the village itself. I suspect that little has changed to the structure of the village for a couple hundred years with white washed houses built into the countryside. We saw a local woman out on the very narrow street with bucket and brush washing the exterior of her house. John wondered if the street was wide enough for vehicle traffic just as one turned the corner and headed our way, but even more exciting was the second car coming in the opposite direction. Driving and parking in this village rivals Rome for the complexity and creativity. We saw one lady park her SUV not in the handicapped stall because that would be illegal but in such a way that no car could possibly access the space. Glad we were on the bus and foot and I would certainly not take an expensive car into any of these small villages because anything goes.
The main streets have been taken over by tourist shops and cafes much of which is catering to the English visitor but you do not need to wander too far off the beaten path to find very narrow streets and quaint houses and shops.
In the tourist bit, there is great competition for trade with waiters on the sidewalk encouraging you to eat and drink. We did sit at one and watched to determine how successful this sales tactic was and we concluded that it deterred many more than it encouraged.
On the way back at the bus station in Fuengirola, we got front row seats to a police incident which John was certain was a crackdown on an unsuccessful terrorist incident. Whatever it was, it did make us aware of police presence and John was amused for a while ~ we all know about his short attention span. He apologizes for not having pictorial documentation of the event but he was ‘in the moment’.
Truly a lovely day in a town more Spanish than others we have seen to date.
